When we first begin to practice meditation, we are instructed to find an "anchor." Other words for anchor are "touchstone" or "primary object of awareness."
Our anchor – that which anchors us to the here and now – is that which we can return to time and again, whenever we find ourselves in need of steadiness and collectedness. Finding an anchor and sustaining our attention on that anchor is a way to strengthen the heart, quiet the mind, and calm the body. Many practitioners find the breath to be a reliable anchor, but the breath isn’t right for everyone; there are other anchors that are equally beneficial.
This word "anchor" means more than finding a suitable object of meditation. It also refers to what in one’s life anchors one. What do you trust? What do you rely upon? Is it serving others? Is it being in nature? We will explore the bigger meaning and practice of finding anchors that can sustain and hold us, come what may. During our day together, each practitioner will be encouraged to explore and to discover anchors that one can return to time and again.
This program is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators. Our time together will include sitting meditation with instructions, talks, and time for discussion and questions. All are warmly welcome.
Full and partial scholarships are available. Please submit your requests to office@cambridgeinsight.org at least 72 hours prior to the start of the program.
