Contemplating the changing colors of the trees, shorter days, and cooler temperatures we are reminded that we are part of nature. We can let go and make room for winter, darkness, renewal, and returning light…the eternal cycle of life. To help us on this journey, the Buddha offered us the Five Spiritual Faculties: faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. Cultivating these faculties can help us strengthen our inner energies, bringing us more ease and spaciousness, which are essential to happiness and true freedom.
These qualities may be found in our everyday lives: trusting confidence in higher values (faith), vigorous effort toward the good, the wholesome, the skillful (energy), attentive awareness (mindfulness), focused steadiness (concentration), and intelligent understanding or discernment (wisdom). Yet, the Buddha’s teachings encourage us to consciously cultivate them to support our practice and the development of insight, the direct path to awakening.
Together, we will reflect together on what can inspire the heart and mind in their journey toward illumination and awakening. Which of the five spiritual faculties – the five superpowers -- needs strengthening? How might we use them to gently weaken unbeneficial and unskillful tendencies to make room for growth into the new?
This practice group is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators. Our time together will include sitting meditation with instructions, talks, and time for discussion and questions. Everyone is welcome.
Full and partial scholarships are available up to 72 hours before the start of the program. This program will not be recorded.
Note: Class will not meet on November 23rd.
