In these challenging times, it has never been more important for LGBTQIA+ folks to reflect on and find refuge in what is reliable and trustworthy. We may find that taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha can help us find the capacity to meet hardship with equanimity, inner steadiness, and compassion. During this silent retreat, we will explore and practice with each of these three refuges.
Taking refuge in the Buddha, we reflect on the inspiration of the Buddha's life, remembering what is possible for us. We can recollect our own innate goodness as well as the goodness of others. We can align our lives so that we alleviate suffering and cultivate true happiness. We can commit ourselves to our own capacity for awakening.
Taking refuge in the Dharma, we reflect on the Buddha's teachings and practices to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and skillful action and to liberate all beings from greed, hatred, and delusion which leads to greater clarity and understanding. Thus, we walk the path of awakening in our life, resolving to live in accordance with what is true.
Taking refuge in the Sangha, we reflect on the power of community to remember that we are not alone; that together we may begin to heal centuries of oppression and trauma with a true sense of interconnection and interdependence with each other and the planet. We align ourselves with the community of people moving in the direction of awakening and liberation.
By taking refuge we come to trust the unfolding of our lives and to act for the benefit of others. We learn that our happiness and sorrow are linked to the happiness and sorrow of all beings.
On this retreat, we will come together as LGBTQIA+ people -- during this LGBTQIA+ History Month -- to practice and take refuge in what matters most in our lives and for the highest good of all. Please join us.
This program is open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators of all ages and all levels of experience.
Full and partial scholarships are available up to 72 hours before the start of the program. This program will not be recorded.
Note: At check-in on Saturday, participants will be asked to volunteer for a short period of mindful service during the retreat—a “yogi job.” Yogi jobs enable the smooth running of the retreat and offer an opportunity to practice alongside other retreat participants.
