Steadiness and wisdom -- in Pali, samatha and vipassana -- are at the heart of Buddhist practice. These two qualities cannot really be separated -- they are like the right and left hands -- but we can emphasize one or the other, responsive to what is needed at any given time. It is essential to know how to cultivate calm and steadiness, and then how to use this calm and steadiness for inquiry. Steadiness offers an initial level of inner peacefulness; this initial level of peacefulness deepens and becomes reliable and stable when we see, with wisdom, phenomena as they are.
We will focus on steadiness on Saturday and wisdom on Sunday. Instructions and various approaches will be offered throughout the retreat regarding steadiness, wisdom, sitting practice, walking practice, and seeing all conditions as material for awakening. The fruit of such a practice is liberation here and now, for the benefit of all beings.
This retreat is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators. Everyone is welcome. Our days together will include talks, interviews, and time for questions and discussion. Single-day registration is not available.
This program will not be recorded. Full and partial scholarships are available up to 72 hours before the start of the program.
