It is said that the greatest gift we can give is the gift of fearlessness. As the new year begins, let’s come together to practice the path of peace: Sīla (virtuous action). In this weekly practice group, we will undertake the Buddha’s challenge of training to refrain from the ten unwholesome actions of body, speech, and mind. These are: destroying life, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, divisive speech, offensive speech, senseless speech, covetousness, malice, and wrong view.
The practice of Sīla is not about being “good” practitioners who are nice and never a bother. Nor is it a simplistic rulebook. It is a nuanced and courageous training that can support us in today’s complex world. When undertaken, this practice immediately begins to:
- Unburden the mind from restlessness, regret, and confusion
- Remove the obstacles in the way of feeling compassion and forgiveness for others
- Powerfully fuel the arising of delight and joy
- Reveal where the “low hanging fruit” of liberation is in our daily life, where we can feel free, awake, and at ease
Taking care with our actions can be a source of great happiness. When our actions are clear, we gain self-respect, self-esteem, and confidence. We become able to give the gift of fearlessness to ourselves and others.
This program is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Our time together will include talks, guided meditation instructions, and ample opportunity for a lively discussion of our fumbles and triumphs in our endeavor to live the Dharma off the cushion. Everyone is welcome.
This program will not be recorded. Full and partial scholarships are available up to 72 hours before the start of the program.
