Calm and Insight -- in Pali, samatha and vipassana -- are at the heart of Buddhist practice. These two qualities can’t really be separated -- they are like the right and left hands -- but we can emphasize one or the other, responsive to what is needed at any given time. It is essential to know how to cultivate calm and steadiness, and then how to use this calm and steadiness for inquiry and the development of insight. Calm offers an initial level of inner peacefulness; this peacefulness is the springboard for inquiring into an uncultivated peace that is stable and reliable.
We will work with developing calm in the morning and insight and wisdom in the afternoon. Instructions and various approaches will be offered throughout the retreat. We will use sitting practice, walking practice, and seeing all conditions as material for awakening. The fruit of such a practice is liberation here and now, for the benefit of all beings.
This retreat is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators. Our day together will include talks, interviews, and time for questions and discussion. Everyone is welcome.
Full and partial scholarships are available.
