In 1985 Larry Rosenberg founded the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center and became its first Guiding Teacher, soon joined by Narayan Helen Liebenson. CIMC was one of the first centers in the west dedicated to teaching the dharma and to supporting practice amidst the complexities of daily life, offering refuge in the heart of Cambridge and to the larger Boston community. Now, with the expansive reach of the internet, CIMC serves a global sangha as well. The seeds planted long ago have been lovingly tended under the guidance and inspiration of the guiding and supporting teachers, and the flourishing of Larry’s vision is evident every day at CIMC.
Jon and Will Kabat-Zinn have spent decades with Larry Rosenberg exploring the nature of mindfulness practice and dharma in different but fundamentally overlapping and intersecting ways. Jon and Will generously offer this benefit where participants will have an opportunity for practice, inquiry, and time for questions and response in a context of celebrating the history of CIMC as an enduring and invaluable daily-life dharma center and refuge for all. All proceeds benefit the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. is Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he founded its world-renown Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Clinic in 1979, and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (CFM), in 1995. Jon’s work has contributed to a growing movement of mindfulness into mainstream institutions such as medicine, psychology, health care, neuroscience, schools, higher education, business, social justice, criminal justice, prisons, the law, technology, the military, government, and professional sports. Over 700 hospitals and medical centers around the world now offer MBSR.
Will Kabat-Zinn has practiced meditation for over two decades and has spent extended time in silent retreat both in the US and in Burma. He is passionate about helping people put into practice and experience for themselves the liberating power of mindfulness. Will has taught meditative practices to diverse populations including educators, scientists, incarcerated youth, law enforcement professionals, parents, and business and technology leaders, and spent a year as an executive in residence at the UC Berkeley HAAS School of Business. He leads retreats and practice intensive retreats around the country and in Europe.
