There is a description of life in Buddhist teaching that evokes truth across generations of human lives. It refers to life in this world as The Ten Thousand Joys and Ten Thousand Sorrows. These don’t only occur across generations, but also within in a single life. In fact, even in a single day we can experience ten thousand joys and sorrows. It’s these subtle and ordinary swings from hostility and fear, to obsession and longing, to indifference and numbness which muddle the natural clarity of mind, potency of action, and peace at heart that are the birthright of all people.
In this six-week practice group, we will convene a community of people of color and learn a set of practices and perspectives alongside one another which offer clarity into (and eventually release from) these swings in the heart. These teachings are named “Awareness of Feeling Tones” (Vedananupassana) which we’ll explore deeply by both learning from tradition, and by making the practice and this wisdom our own.
This program is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators. Everyone who identifies as a person-of-color is welcome.
