This class will study the Metta Sutta--the Buddha's Discourse on Loving Kindness. This sutta is one of the most loved poems in the Buddist tradition. It is a guide to living with greater inner peace and harmony with the world and gives rise to the most beautiful states of mind that are possible. Topics we will explore include wise speech and listening, contentment, thoughtfulness, peaceful demeanor, simplicity, and engagement in our life with qualities of lightness and presence.
The Discourse on Loving Kindness
This is what's done by one skilled in what's good,
Who reaches toward that most peaceful state:
One would be capable, and straight--quite straight;
Well-spoken, gentle, without too much pride;
Content with little, easily maintained,
Not doing too much and lightly engaged;
Thoughtful, with a peaceful demeanor, and
Modest, without greed among worldly things.
One would not do even the slightest thing
That others who are wise would speak against.
May they be secure and profoundly well;
May all beings be happy in themselves....
Sitting and walking meditation, discussion, and daily life practice will be used to develop more skillful ways of relating to our moment-to-moment experience. Everyone is welcome.
