Calm and Insight -- in Pali, samatha and vipassana -- are at the heart of Buddhist practice. Samatha also translates as tranquility, inner balance, silence, and an initial level of inner peacefulness. Vipassana also translates as insight, wisdom, inquiry, and illumination penetrating to the deepest level of peace possible.
These two qualities can’t really be separated -- they are like the right and left hands -- but we can emphasize one or the other, responsive to what is needed at any given time. It is essential to know how to cultivate calm and steadiness, and then how to use this calm and steadiness for inquiry and the development of insight. Calm offers an initial level of inner peacefulness; this peacefulness is the springboard for inquiring into an uncultivated peace that is stable and reliable. The fruit of such a practice is liberation here and now, for the benefit of all beings.
This daylong retreat is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators and is an extended opportunity to engage in the formal practices of sitting and walking. Various approaches will be offered throughout the retreat. Our day together will include instructions, talks, and time for discussion and questions.
Full and partial scholarships are available up to 72 hours before the start of the program.
Note: At check-in, participants will be asked to volunteer for a short period of mindful service during the retreat—a "yogi job." Yogi jobs enable the smooth running of the retreat and offer an opportunity to practice alongside other retreat participants.
